What is This Yahoo Window In Outlook and Why Can’t I Get My Email?

In Spring of 2024, Cox decided they wanted to get out of the email business. Email customers had to migrate over to using Yahoo mail if they wanted to continue using their @cox.net email address. These are many of the people who are faced with a random Yahoo window popping up in Outlook (or other desktop email client). Not sure what an email client is? Keep reading.

An email client is the program/application that you use to read your email. An example of an email client is Outlook. Yahoo mail works with Outlook HOWEVER, every few months or so Yahoo will prompt you to sign into your Yahoo email account. This will happen when you open Outlook or your other email client to read your email and you will not be able to read your email until you login and agree to their new terms and conditions if they have them. The screenshots below will give you an idea of the steps as of this writing.

You need to make sure you have your Yahoo email account password handy. This will NOT be the same one as your old Cox email password because in the transition, Yahoo required you to set up a new one.

The Yahoo sign in screen will then open in your internet browser to continue the process.

Follow through the remaining prompts which may vary, such as terms and conditions etc. until you have completed the process.

Further tips about Yahoo Mail:

  • If Yahoo Mail prompts you to set up multi-factor authentication you should do it.
  • If Yahoo Mail prompts you to set up a recovery email or phone number you should do it. If you get locked out of your Yahoo account their support may be able to help, but it will be time consuming and expensive because they charge for it.
  • If you really do not like the customer experience you get with Yahoo, you can transition away from Yahoo mail to another free provider. We usually recommend Outlook.com by Microsoft, but Gmail from Google is also an option. Keep in mind that with Gmail, the experience in an email client will be similar to Yahoo.
  • Advantages of getting an outlook.com email:
    • Microsoft security
    • Many people already have a Microsoft account so adding an outlook.com account to it is easy — Very important: if you do already have a Microsoft account add an outlook.com address to it rather than creating a new Microsoft account.
    • It works really well with Outlook for desktop, mobile, web.
